Restoring a 1960 Plymouth? Don’t Overlook the Mirrors

There’s nothing worse than pouring months into a restoration and having someone say, “Nice car—are those the right mirrors?” I’ve heard it at car shows, swap meets, and even in the parking lot at the grocery store. The mirrors on a 1960 Plymouth might seem like a small detail—but for the folks who know, they’re one of the first things they look at.

And if you’ve ever tried to find a correct mirror for a 1960 Plymouth, you already know—it’s not exactly a walk through the parts aisle.

Mirror Fitment Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

While a lot of aftermarket suppliers sell “universal” mirrors, trust me—you don’t want to bolt those onto a ’60. The mounting holes don’t line up, the angle’s off, and you’ll wind up plugging or re-drilling your door skin. No thanks.

Here’s what you need to know about original-style fit:

  • Driver’s side mirrors were mounted on the door, often forward of the vent window.

  • Passenger side mirrors were optional—and harder to find with correct bases.

  • Base angle and curvature need to match the door line exactly to avoid gaps or poor visibility.

Factory Style vs Aftermarket Custom

If you’re going for a factory-original look, reproduction mirrors are your best bet. The finish, mounting hardware, and mirror angle are all designed to match the originals. These are the types of details judges notice at car shows—and what makes your ride look like it rolled off the assembly line.

Now, if you’re building more of a resto-mod, a clean aftermarket option might be fine—but stay period-appropriate. Nothing sticks out like a bullet mirror on a ‘60s sedan.

Watch for Common Restoration Mistakes

Here’s what I’ve seen too many times:

  • Folks install the wrong mirror, realize it doesn’t fit, then drill a second set of holes.

  • Others buy chromed plastic versions that fade in one season.

  • Some don’t check for passenger-side compatibility and end up with mismatched sets.

Andy’s Tip: If you’re not sure what came on your car, check old photos, factory literature, or just give us a call. We’ve matched more mirrors than I can count.

Don’t Let the Details Let You Down

The right mirror won’t just look good—it’ll help complete the character of your car. When it fits right, reflects right, and shines like it belongs there, you know you’ve done it justice.

Restoration is all about the little things, and mirrors are one of the easiest ways to show that you know what you’re doing.
